About

ANNE CLAIRE DE BREIJ / Naarden 1984

Anne Claire de Breij (1984) is an Amsterdam-based photographer who graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Since then, she has made a name for herself as a freelance photographer, primarily active in the cultural sector. She has built an impressive body of work, characterized by conceptual portraits and still lifes. Her longstanding collaboration with Volkskrant Magazine has established her as a prominent figure in photography. Anne Claire’s photography stands out for its disorienting, graphic, and colorful style. She plays with reality, misleads the viewer, and often provokes a smile. This is achieved through meticulously crafted sets, precise compositions, and her signature twist.

Her work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum, Huis Marseille, FOAM, H’ART Museum, and Eye Filmmuseum. In 2013, she published her first photo book, Dutch Champions, for which she traveled across the Netherlands to document both well-known and underappreciated champions, such as the national Scrabble champion and the champion budgie breeder. In the summer of 2023, Anne Claire released her second book, The Mukade And The Mountain, featuring work created during an artist residency in Japan. The book presents staged portraits and still lifes inspired by Japanese legends, rituals, and folklore. It was recognized as one of the Best Designed Books and exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum.

In 2022, Anne Claire received the SO Award from DuPho. The jury praised her work as “almost real-life photo collages. Her use of color is fantastic, her compositions are always fun, and her work never lacks humor.”
