I was deeply honoured when I was asked to create the portraits for the final season of VPRO Zomergasten.
Since 1988, Zomergasten has been a defining part of the Dutch television summer. Each episode invites a prominent guest from the worlds of culture, science or society to curate their own evening through a selection of television, online and film fragments, offering a unique insight into their memories, influences and personal worldview.
For this series, I looked for a visual language that echoes the nature of the programme itself. Through mirrors and fragments of cloud-filled sky, I created layered, fragmented portraits in which each guest appears from multiple perspectives. Like the conversations in Zomergasten, the portraits reveal themselves gradually; through fragments, reflections and layers, building towards a more complete image of a person.
The portraits feature the guests of the final season: comedian Peter Pannekoek, journalist Nasrah Habiballah, artist Merel Pauw, writer Tommy Wieringa, international negotiator and former politician Sigrid Kaag, and psychiatrist Jim van Os.
